MOBILIA

DISPLAY STAND. 2017.

Location: exhibition

Type: studio project

A chair exhibition stand for Arne Jacobsen’s Series 7 3107 chair. Features of the chair showcased through the structure include its range of colours, weightlessness, its curved silhouette, crossed legs and its material.

As well as echoing the chair's simplicity, its X and its curvature, the exhibition stand needs to be modest so it does not overpower the subject itself. 3107 chairs are hung upside down to demonstrate its lightness, while allowing visitors to be able to observe from all angles. Composed of four planks of identical curved timber panels placed in alternate directions, each panel is raised by 0.2m by having a small lighting block underneath each of them prevent viewers from stepping on the structure. The panels are 3.2m at their tallest points, also allowing 0.2m at the top for lighting.

The stand model was constructed in a similar manner to the manufacturing method of the chair itself. The 3107 shell is mass-produced using a technique where pressure is applied by the heated mould onto the piece of plywood. In the model, curves were shaped using the method of lamination. After applying PVA glue to stick three sheets of balsa together, they were inserted between a wooden mould. The piece is then clamped tightly and left overnight.
