GARDEN METROPOLIS

PEN ON PAPER. 2018.

Location: London

Type: summer project

A2 pen drawing for the UCL Bartlett studio, winner of the Studio Prize. A re-imagination of a future London where the technological fuses with the natural world.

The brief questions the face of the future where automation becomes the norm as technology takes over. Investigating the amalgamation of such technological advancements like those explored by Tesla, Amazon and Audi, this task responds as a rebellion on the man-made by imagining a future city ruled by the natural world.

The project explores a city composed of creature-like yet machine-esque structures, whether with or without intention. On one hand, as we look more and more into the intricacies of technology, we seem to find ourselves mimicking nature, as demonstrated in the organic anatomy of the latest Wendelstein Stellarator. On the other hand, from synthetic leaves to vertical forests, it is evident that in the current digital age people are seeking to reconnect with the environment by integrating it with technology. As an area that represents development, the fate of Canary Wharf is reimagined in this line drawing.

Canary Wharf is one of the newest developed business areas of the urban city of London, which acts as a representation of development. Perhaps in the future, the plan of the site will look like a creature, with parts differentiated according to their functions including banks, offices, malls, restaurants and much more.
