BOUWKUNST

GALLERY. 2019.

Client: Hauser & Wirth (prospective)

Location: Amsterdam

Type: studio project

This art gallery and mixed used building focuses on creating dramatic transitions between light and darkness, while exploring the juxtaposition between opacity and transparency, heavy and light, orthogonal and organic, hidden and public, as well as vibrancy and quietude through the manipulation of volumes and use of materials.

The exhibition floor is wrapped in glazing which provides the circulation space with plenty of light, whereas the flexible and enclosed gallery spaces are dark. This floor is sandwiched between two concrete-heavy blocks. The building itself is complimented by a community farmer's market, in the hofje created at the back of the building.

"...to make an object very striking, we should make it as different as possible from the objects with which we have been immediately conversant..."

Edmund Burke (1729–1797). 'On the Sublime and Beautiful'.
